Simone Callender takes gold in Switzerland

Tuesday 21 April 2009

Three Buokwai Squad members fought in the Swiss Open in April.

The Ladies competed on the Saturday with Charlotte Farbon in the U48. She began strongly against the Belgian Amelie Rossenau, but lost when she was caught with an arm lock. Rossenau went on to win the U48 category. This put her in to the repercharge where she beat the Scot Gillian Hendry comfortably for a waza-ari. In a close contest against the French, which went the full distance, and wasn’t able to be decided in Golden score, the referees awarded the decision to the French girl Nadine Gillme. A good performance by Charlotte and well deserved 5th place!

Simone Callender fought in the +78’s which was a final pool of 5. She started off strong, out working and out attacking her Austrian opponent Julia Pfeifer, the Austrian received passivity penalties which eventually led to her being disqualified.

In her next fight against German Sabrina Pfortner she threw her for a waza-ari with a pick up. Simone cruised past Claudia Proust from German with an Ippon throw with a cross leg grab. Her final fight against another German, Beatrice Rietz, proved to be Simone’s toughest fight, going to Golden score. Simone tactically out gripped the German and beat her to the attack. The referee awarded the decision to Simone giving her the Gold medal in the +78’s.

James Gilmore competed on the Sunday in the U81’s. He won his first fight against Belgian Tim Van Glabeke, throwing him for a yuko. In his next fight against Robert Conrad from Germany, he got caught in Golden score for a yuko. Unfortunately the German went on to lose his next fight putting James out of the competition.

Congratulations to all, especially Simone for such a fine performance.
