James started with a young Mexican called Armando Ortiz a very fit tactical fighter who scored a early yuko. James fought back to score with a koka. Ortiz then incureed a shido and in the last few seconds James scored a yuko to take the lead only to concede an ippon lost after a sumi gaeshi attempt was countered with a leg grab for ippon on the last bell.
Ortiz when on to fight Fatos Tabaku from Kosovo, which he lost.

Broom fought Dennis Iverson from Australia he took an initial lead with a drop seoinage for a koka. Then followed a close tactical contest when Iverson suddenly scored a yuko with a pick up. Broom fought hard to get back into the fight, but succumbed to a choke right on the bell.
Iverson subsequently lost to Nicolas Mussard from France who went on to win a bronze medal.

Gilmore's first fight was against Sacha Denanyoh a strong tactical fighter who threw the Austrian in the first round. James was dominant throughout the whole contest, but with five seconds to go before golden score he was thrown for 10 points with a drop seoinage.
