21st Bosphorous Judo Tournament 1st -2nd July 2007

A somewhat depleted through injury but spirited Budokwai Judo Team arrived in Istanbul sweltering in temperatures over 30 degrees centigrade to compete in this world class event famous for its unique mix of unorthodox fighters from all over the region. The Azerbejanis had five fighters in each category for starters.

On Saturday Peter Broom was our representative in the U73 category. Peter has just been selected to fight for New Zealand in the World Championships in Rio in September. He started well against Koba Chimchuiri of the Ukraine, a strong tactical fight with many grip exchanges for four minutes when his opponent received a penalty for passivity. Peter then completed a spectacular pickup which although slow was scored ippon by the referee, wazari by one judge and a yuko by the second. After bowing off the fighters were called back and the wazari reinstated. Broom recovering from a bout of flue visibly faded in the last minute and was thrown for ten by harai goshi. His opponent also won his next fight against an Israeli but then went out to the eventual bronze medallist from Azerbejan. The U73kgs category was won by an outstanding Russian called Malkaz Ozadze who enjoyed an all ippon run through to the final.

On Sunday the Budokwai had two representatives in the U90kgs. Jonathon Purssey who took a bronze in the Tre Torri recently started well against a strong and unpredictable opponent from Senegal Cheik Omar. After three minutes of manic grip fighting Cheik was dispatched for ten with Sode Tsuri Komi Goshi. His next opponent Habib Aliev from Azerbejan provided a very tough match with intense grip exchanges. Jonathon was thrown for ten with sumi gaeshi. He must learn to circle in such exchanges where they are enticed into a deep jigotai. A frustrating loss his opponent subsequently lost to a Ukranian who in turn was defeated by a very talented Russian called Zafar Makhmadov.
Simon Childs had a gruelling start against Teymuraz Bakarandze of Russia who he beat with a three point score. His next opponent Allahverdiev from Azerbejan proved equally demanding but Simon secured another three point win. The next round went to his Georgian opponent Revan Chikoidze. Into the repechage and to golden score when Simon opponent scored yuko with harai goshi against his Ukranain opponent. In his last fight Simon met the young German fighter Hannes Vetter who eventually caught him with a left Harai Goshi for ten and seventh place overall. Simon had an excellent day gaining tremendous experience against this tactical and unorthodox fighters.
